Who we are

Smart City Hack (SCH), formerly know as “Smart City App Hack”, is an initiative by dotopen with the participation of the world’s leading smart cities.

The first edition of the Smart City Hack has been launched in March 2015 during the Mobile World Congress with the aim of bringing together the leading smart cities sharing similar challenges and vision: how to turn citizens into solutions builders, empowering them to develop functioning technology products that solve pressing civic challenges. In 2015 we got 11 cities worldwide involved and have supported over 6500 engaged smart citizens that found inspiration in five main themes and came out with 164 finished apps.

What we do

The SCH competition provides the platform for local residents to create smarter, better and more sustainable cities and improve the quality of life for residents in cities around the world.

The project was developed as an open innovation process (city as a platform) that enables going from generic urban problems to specific, usable and sustainable tech-based solutions. It does so by proposing opportunity spaces; offering resources, mentorship and support; along with the needed visibility events and communications.

Ultimately SCH is also a common ground where cities and partners can share and explore experiences and perspectives around the rising role of smart citizen engagement.

Smart City Hack 2016

After a very successful first edition, we’re happy to announce we’re back for Smart City Hack 2016. Dropping the ‘app’ from our name, we’re decided to launch a more open, collaborative and tech focused entity. Now all technologies focused on improving your area’s smart city capabilities will be accepted - from mobile applications to IoT.

Once more working with the knowledge that more than half of the world's population will live in cities by 2050, we understand the only way to meet these challenges is for cities themselves to adapt and evolve. This year’s themes on which to work are Health and Welfare, Collaborative Cities, Culture and Tourism; Urban Mobility and Energy and Emissions. With our online incubation platform developers can access resources, mentorship and specialized face-to-face online workshops to improve and implement their innovative projects. Join us!
